Abstract

The subject of the study is related to the belief of Alevism in the novel titled Bir Oddity in My Head by Nobel Prize-winning author Orhan Pamuk. Orhan Pamuk's novel A Strangeness in My Head has a rich content in the context of the belief of Alevism, the world of meaning and its practices. In the research, discourses about the belief and identity of Alevism were interpreted and summarized by using the opportunities of literature sociology. As a matter of fact, the sociology of literature is the discipline of describing the lifestyle, values, beliefs, economic systems, thought structure of the period in which the work was written with the unique characteristics of literature. In this article, the phenomenon of Alevism is taken as the center of the research; the practices of Alevism culture, the perspective of society on Alevism belief and identity, and how Alevism is represented are examined. As a result of the research, it was understood that narrow-minded and hamas-filled people who migrated from the countryside to the suburban districts of Istanbul evaluated social groups with Alevism belief from a Sunni-centered perspective, and Alevi citizens living Istanbul in the 1970s were seen as other, undesirable and unwelcome people in society. It has been determined that Alevi individuals are exposed to discrimination and exclusion, especially in the family, marriage institution, religion, education, business life, military and social life.
